fearless? fear this!

this weekend, i was able to relax a bit and after an ugly hectic friday, sarah and i caught the late showing of jet li's Fearless. it's a period piece loosely based on a real life "hero" that arose during china's open door policy to bring pride and unity back to the country. in a time where foreigners were dominating all aspects of progress and economy, my ancestors were all "go ahead take the money, just leave the kung-fu." jet li at 42, is still amazing. very little wire wushu and still so goddam fast that the camera has to go into slo-mo just to see the action. anyway, my quick take was the movie was Great, the crowd Sucked. f#$%ing ignorant ass dumb inconsiderate americans almost ruined it for me. let me explain.

The movie is of course, an import from hong kong. that also means it was subbed, not dubbed. that's fine and dandy but it's a pity that americans are illiterate! i have to admit i did laugh at the movie opener though. in order to set-up the time and environment the producers employed the use of a star wars like panel of scrolling text. that was the funny part - it was the pace at which the text scrolled. it would be like reading this post projected on a large screen in about 5 seconds.
and unlike a lot of martial art flicks, between all of the action there was a real story here....and the knuckle-heads watching the show couldn't handle it. everytime the action slowed they started talking up and blissfully ignored the jeers and requests whispered by neighbors to kindly "shut the f$%& up."

it really makes me sad that i cannot go to the movies and enjoy one with a little bit of culture. how people can be so unaware just pains me. it makes me glad i bought Hero, House of Flying Daggers and Ong-bak via eBay to watch at home first.
